The Holman Building. The renovation itself is indeed well-done, but I was struck most by the massive stone tablets out front: pieces of the exterior wall that were removed (for new windows) and are now silent monoliths against the presence of the lemming-like rush of freeway. I see a juxtapositional statement of inevitable decay in the crumbling edges. Props to artist Linda Wysong.

"Ross Island, the bridge's namesake, was at one time home to a famous distillery. McArthur's Oregon Geographic Names, an indispensable work, says the island was once legendary for its "'Blue Ruin' whiskey of pioneer days . . . it was a fluid of high voltage." The distillery is gone, and now it is home to a large number of Blue Heron rookeries."
