Seems like a good time to devote a post exclusively to my studies of the semiological underpinnings of Homo Sapiens Portlandialithicus. Mostly because I've found some good (if occasionally perplexing) stuff around town, including a beautiful metal leaf art project wrapped around a telephone pole not far from PSU. And if you're wondering about the second to last shot (it's a dumpster), well, it just seemed like the perfect marriage of bureaucratic perfunctoriness and the kind of art that happens when things get scraped, dinged, and tagged by competing owners.

"Ross Island, the bridge's namesake, was at one time home to a famous distillery. McArthur's Oregon Geographic Names, an indispensable work, says the island was once legendary for its "'Blue Ruin' whiskey of pioneer days . . . it was a fluid of high voltage." The distillery is gone, and now it is home to a large number of Blue Heron rookeries."
